Data sources in the product

This page explains how sources appear in Decised and defines acronyms. The full public register with publisher URLs, licences and retrieval notes lives on UK business data sources.

Acronyms used in Decised

  • ONS, Office for National Statistics. The UK’s national statistical institute; publishes inflation, labour market, GDP, and business demography series.
  • IDBR, Inter-Departmental Business Register. The ONS business register that underpins official openings and closures (activity) statistics.
  • SIC, Standard Industrial Classification. The UK coding system for industry sectors (for example cafes vs retail).
  • LAD, Local Authority District. The geography used for many local counts and place comparisons.
  • Nomis, The ONS service for official labour market and business-count statistics (including UK Business Counts by local authority).
  • HMLR, HM Land Registry. Publisher of England and Wales Price Paid Data (residential sales lodged for registration).
  • UK HPI, UK House Price Index. Local-authority index and change; not a valuation.
  • VOA, Valuation Office Agency. Non-domestic rating stock (hereditaments and rateable value), not asking rent.
  • MHCLG, Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government. England planning application statistics (PS1/PS2): received, decided and granted.
  • OSM, OpenStreetMap. Community-mapped venues and places; descriptive map context only, not a scored input.
  • BoE, Bank of England. Source of Bank Rate history used in macro context.
  • GDP, Gross Domestic Product. A UK macro growth series shown as observed context.

Local market (Nomis)

UK Business Counts (enterprises, dataset NM_142_1) and population by local authority (LAD). The published all-industry total uses the official Nomis total cell (industry code 150994944), not the sum of rounded SIC section counts. Vintage years are shown on the report. Same-industry counts use Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) sections where available and are labelled as broad sectors, not exact competitors.

Companies House (company mode)

Live company profile, filing calendar, officers, persons with significant control, charges, insolvency and filing history. Financial figures appear only when present in a public filing and mapped to a versioned taxonomy; micro-entity and similar accounts show profit-and-loss as Not publicly filed. Comparable companies use documented SIC, status, geography and age filters, not “every same-SIC company is a direct competitor”. Registered office is not treated as the trading location.

Property pack (HMLR, UK HPI, VOA, MHCLG)

Property search uses frozen local-authority aggregates under the property snapshot pack (schema property_snapshots.v2) for gazetteer local authorities. You can search by postcode, neighbourhood or authority name; the brief is framed on that place, while sold-price, VOA and planning figures remain authority-wide until finer freezes exist. Residential Price Paid and VOA cover England and Wales when the current release still carries the code; UK HPI loads where published; England planning uses MHCLG PS1/PS2. Each family is frozen with about ten years of history, annual Price Paid, monthly UK HPI, VOA financial years including a per-sector breakdown, and planning quarters, so the latest period can be read against its own past. Incomplete latest months withhold trend and are dropped from the series. Address-level Price Paid is not shown. Local registered-business counts and top SIC sections appear as area context, not a recommendation of what to start. Live dig-in overlays from planning.data.gov.uk add flood zones, listed buildings, Article 4, conservation areas, local plan boundaries, green belt, tree preservation orders, scheduled monuments, brownfield land and named applications where the LPA is covered, incomplete coverage stays missing, absence is not an all-clear, and nothing enters a score. Overlay points can appear on the property map. EPC ratings and sample lodgements appear for a full postcode when free Open Data credentials are configured; outcode-only searches keep a Find Energy Certificate research link instead. Companies House property SIC counts remain an optional labelled proxy only: not an active-developer census. Student focus does not invent PBSA or student HMO registers. Scotland and Northern Ireland packs do not invent England/Wales Price Paid or VOA figures. Superseded authority codes stay missing rather than inventing successor totals. ONS business demography

Observed openings and closures rates from a versioned Office for National Statistics (ONS) bulletin extract. These are Inter-Departmental Business Register (IDBR) activity aggregates: not a plan success probability and not Companies House register survival.

Place context (descriptive only)

  • police.uk, recorded street-level offences in the focus radius. May fall back to a narrower extract if a large polygon is refused.
  • Local and business news, headlines discovered through Google News RSS, including an attributed Yahoo News / Yahoo Finance query. This is not a direct Yahoo API or a verified fact feed.
  • OpenStreetMap (OSM / Overpass), nearby venues as community-mapped presence, not Nomis counts.
  • Map centre and tiles, Nominatim resolves a place when available; otherwise a clearly labelled packaged registered-office anchor keeps the map visible. Esri is the default basemap. Neither the anchor nor the tiles enter scoring.
Crime, news, and OpenStreetMap (OSM) venues must not enter a decision score. They sit beside the evidence so you can inspect them, not so the product can rank them.

Listing portals (research only)

Property reports may show live listing cards from Rightmove, Zoopla, OnTheMarket and PrimeLocation for the searched place, with an asking-price scan across loaded cards (min / median / max and bed mix). Those cards are unverified research only, not Decised evidence, not part of the freeze, and never in a score. See Search a UK property area.
